Upload Shipments in Bulk

Upload multiple shipments at once using a CSV file.

Updated over a week ago

Bulk Upload allows you to add multiple shipments to OpenTrack at the same time using a CSV file. This is useful for teams managing large shipment volumes or adding multiple shipments in a single upload.

Step 1: Open the Bulk Upload Page

Navigate to Start Tracking in the left navigation menu and select the Bulk Upload tab.

Step 2: Download the CSV Template

Click Download Bulk Import CSV Template to download the recommended file format.

Using the template ensures your spreadsheet contains the correct column structure.

Step 3: Format Your Spreadsheet

The Bulk Upload template includes the following default columns:

  • Master Bill

  • Container ID

  • Carrier SCAC

These fields help OpenTrack identify shipments and locate them across ocean carrier systems.

Tracking by Master Bill

The only field required to begin tracking a shipment is the Master Bill of Lading (MBL).

When you upload a Master Bill, OpenTrack will automatically discover and track all containers associated with that shipment.

Example

Master Bill

MAEU123456789

YMLU987654321

Tracking Specific Containers

If you want to track specific containers only, include both:

  • Master Bill

  • Container ID

Example

Master Bill

Container ID

MAEU123456789

ABCD1234567

When Carrier SCAC Is Required

If your Master Bill does not include the carrier prefix, you must include the Carrier SCAC code so OpenTrack knows which carrier system to query.

Example

Master Bill

Carrier SCAC

123456789

MAEU

Adding Custom Fields

If your organization uses additional shipment fields (such as internal references or customer identifiers), these fields can also be included in your upload file.

To enable and configure custom fields, see:

Once enabled, additional columns can be added to your spreadsheet using the configured field names.

Step 4: Upload Your File

Once your spreadsheet is formatted:

  1. Click Choose File

  2. Select your CSV file

  3. Click the Upload icon

If any rows contain errors, OpenTrack will notify you and identify which rows need to be corrected.

Step 5: View Your Tracked Shipments

After the upload completes, your shipments will appear on the Tracked Containers tab.

OpenTrack will begin discovering containers and tracking shipment activity automatically.

Important Notes

Existing shipments will not be duplicated
If a container or Master Bill already exists in your account, it will not be added again.

Tracking begins automatically
Once a valid row is uploaded, OpenTrack immediately begins locating containers and monitoring shipment milestones.

Next Steps

Now that you know how to upload shipments in bulk, you may want to automate how shipments are added to OpenTrack.
