Guide to ETN at Final Rail Facility in OpenTrack

This guide explains the Estimated Time of Notification (ETN) at the Final Rail Facility and how it predicts when a container will be available for pickup after arriving by rail. It also shows where to find this estimate in OpenTrack.

Updated today

OpenTrack now provides an Estimated Time of Notification (ETN) at the Final Rail Facility for Domestic Rail shipments. This estimate predicts when a rail facility is expected to notify that a container is available for pickup after arriving at the terminal.

This capability is powered by the latest version of OpenTrack’s rail prediction model and is designed to give customers greater visibility into post-arrival rail processing times.

What is ETN at Final Rail Facility?

The ETN at Final Rail Facility represents the predicted date and time when a rail facility is expected to issue a final availability notification for a container.

While the ETA to Final Rail Facility indicates when a container is expected to arrive at the rail terminal, containers are typically not immediately available for pickup. Facilities require time to unload, process, and notify parties that the container is ready.

The ETN prediction estimates this additional processing window.

Where to Find It

You can view the ETN at Final Rail Facility in both the Container Summary view and within Explore.

Container Summary

Within the shipment tracking page, the ETN appears in the Summary tab under the Rail section, alongside other rail timing data.

Location in the platform:

Shipment Details → Summary Tab → Rail Section

The field appears alongside related rail information, including:

  • Inland ETD (Rail)

  • Departed on Rail

  • ETA to Final Rail Facility

  • ETN at Final Rail Facility

  • Rail Transit Time

The ETN includes both a projected date and timestamp, providing more precise visibility into when the rail facility is expected to notify that the container is available for pickup.

Explore

You can also view this estimate within Explore when analyzing shipment data.

Explore field name: Inland ETN (Rail)

This field represents the same prediction displayed in the Container Summary and can be used for reporting, filtering, and operational planning.

How the Estimate is Generated

The ETN prediction is produced using machine learning models trained on historical rail facility performance data.

The model evaluates patterns such as:

  • Time between rail arrival and availability

  • Facility processing behaviors

  • Historical turnaround performance

This allows OpenTrack to estimate how long it will likely take for a container to become available after arrival.

How to Use This Prediction

The ETN can help teams better plan downstream operations, including:

  • Drayage scheduling

  • Warehouse appointment planning

  • Pickup coordination

  • Operational staffing

By estimating when a container will realistically be available for pickup, teams can reduce unnecessary waiting time and improve planning accuracy.

Current Availability

The ETN at Final Rail Facility is currently available for:

Domestic Rail shipments

We are continuing to refine the model and plan to expand this capability to Import Rail shipments in the future.

Model Improvements and Feedback

This feature uses the latest version of OpenTrack’s rail prediction model and will continue to improve as additional shipment data is incorporated.

If you notice examples where the estimate is particularly accurate or off target, feedback is valuable for helping us refine the model and improve prediction accuracy over time.
