Avoiding costly detention charges depends on knowing exactly when your containers need to be returned. OpenTrack now provides Detention Last Free Day (LFD) data, giving you the precise deadline information you need to stay ahead of detention risk.

What’s New?

Until now, detention LFD data was not consistently available from carriers, and you couldn’t align it with your specific contract terms. That meant, by default, detention management was often more manual and reactive.

With OpenTrack’s direct carrier integrations and configurable contract terms, you can now:

  • Access reliable detention LFD data directly from your carriers

  • Configure detention rules to match your unique agreements with each partner

  • See detention deadlines right alongside your existing shipment visibility

Why This Matters

Detention fees are one of the most unpredictable and expensive pain points in container operations. By bringing detention LFD data into OpenTrack — fully integrated into your reports, alerts, and analytics — you can move from reactive firefighting to proactive cost management.

How It Works

Detention LFD can appear on a container in two ways:

  1. Direct from carriers (easiest) — OpenTrack now retrieves detention LFD directly from a growing number of ocean carriers, including HMM, Maersk, ONE, and OOCL.

  2. Dynamic calculation (best for full coverage) — simply provide your number of free days per ocean carrier or per customer, and OpenTrack dynamically calculates the correct detention LFD for each container.

With these two methods combined, you get the most complete and accurate picture of detention deadlines available.

Where to Find Detention LFD in OpenTrack

Once configured, the Detention Last Free Day field is visible in two key places:

  1. Explore Page — add it as a selectable column in your reports, filter by it, and export it to CSV.

  2. Container Detail Panel — view the detention deadline for each individual container alongside all other shipment details.

Key Benefits

  • Proactive planning — shift from chasing deadlines to managing them ahead of time

  • Cost control — reduce detention fees by spotting issues before they escalate

  • End-to-end visibility — see detention deadlines integrated with your reports and alerts

Examples of What You Can Do

  • Monitor containers with pickups after the detention LFD

  • Identify containers returned past deadline for charge recovery

  • Receive early warnings for upcoming detention deadlines so your team can act before penalties hit
